Niklaus Heeb was born in Basel in 1965. After finishing school in 1984, he attended the introductory semester in biochemistry at the University of Basel. Thereafter he passed the preparatory course at the School of Design in Basel and studied to become a scientific illustrator at the Zurich University of Design and the Arts (HGKZ) from 1986 - 1991. Since that time he has worked as a freelance artist and illustrator for clients that include zoos, museums, universities and print media. From 1996 - 2000 he studied integrative biology at the University of Basel, graduating in 2002. In 2000, he received the HGKZ sponsorship award and has been lecturing at this institution from 2002 onwards. He has also been heading the Scientific Visualization field of studies since 2006.
